Students’ Innovation Oscars Olympiad 2023
BACKGROUND
The Kenya Innovation Week (KIW) is an annual event that celebrates innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology in Kenya and across Africa. In 2022, KIW hosted a track on Students’ Innovation. The turn out and outcome pointed to the thirst of more students to participate, the need to link this track and mainstream it with the rest of the events for the innovation week and bringing on board more stakeholders who support the students’ innovation ecosystem among others. This year, KIW Commonwealth Edition will also host the Students’ Innovation Oscars Olympiad summit among others.Â

The Students’ Innovation Oscars Olympiad Summit is designed to empower and showcase the potential of students who are creating user-centred innovations to address societal challenges. It will be powered by Start-Africa and other partners like STEM Impact Center Kenya, I Choose Life Africa among others. The participants will be drawn from multiple countries in Africa and will include students from primary, high school, TVETs, Universities and supporters of the student’s innovation ecosystem from government, the private sector, non-state actors and the academia.Â

Aspirations
The Students’ Innovation Oscars Olympiad is aimed at fostering creativity, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving skills among students. It is also a platform for students from various educational institutions across Africa to showcase their innovative ideas, collaborate with like-minded peers, and gain valuable insights from industry experts. This will Africa’s largest students’ innovation extravaganza, dedicated to showcasing the pivotal role of schools, colleges & universities in fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
This year’s summit will bring together aspiring entrepreneurs, industry experts, investors, and thought leaders to showcase innovative ideas and solutions, exchange knowledge, and foster more vital collaboration among key innovation ecosystem players within participating countries and across the continent.
Key Aspirations of the Students’ Innovations Oscars Olympiad:
Innovations at scale
The Student Innovations Oscars Olympiad will provide a platform for student innovators to showcase their groundbreaking ideas and solutions to local challenges and opportunities in their immediate surroundings with relevance to the rest of the continent. There will be a Student Innovations Oscars Olympiad pavilion that will host the innovators
Unlimited Collaboration
The Students’ Innovations Oscar Olympiad will serve as a catalyst for collaboration between startups, established businesses, and investors. By connecting diverse stakeholders, we aim to create a vibrant ecosystem that nurtures partnerships, knowledge sharing, and investment opportunities.
Borderless Entrepreneurship
The summit will inspire and equip aspiring student entrepreneurs with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to transform their ideas into successful startups that can operate across borders. This will be done through a series of engaging activities like talks, plenary sessions, bootcamps, concerts, fireside chats, pitching competitions, OSCARs award for teams among others.
Sustainable Development Supercharged
By involving hundreds of millions of young people in creating innovative solutions to development challenges, the Students’ Innovations Oscar Olympiad will contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Agenda 2063 and the specific country vision plans.
- Expected Outcomes
- The Students’ Innovations Oscars Olympiad2023 aims to achieve the following outcomes:
- a) Increased awareness and enthusiasm for innovation and entrepreneurship among students in Africa as a driving force for Africa’s economic development and growth.
- b) Enhanced skills in ideation, problem-solving, collaboration entrepreneurial and innovative mindsets
- c) Increased networking opportunities between students, industry professionals, and potential investors.
- d) Identification of promising startups and innovative projects for further development and support.
- e) Increased visibility of students' innovative ideas and projects in the wider community.
- Participants
- The participants will be drawn from the following:
- • Student innovators: High school and college students who have developed innovative solutions to address societal challenges.
- • Faculty and teachers: Educators who have played a role in guiding and nurturing student innovators.
- • Partner organizations: Nonprofits, incubators, and accelerators that support student innovation and entrepreneurship.
- • Industry experts/private sector: Professionals with expertise in innovation, entrepreneurship, and relevant sectors
- • Government representatives: Officials from relevant ministries and agencies supporting innovation and education.
- • Media partners and influencers: Journalists and content creators who can amplify the impact of student innovations.
- The target participants for the summit is 450 students broken down as follows:
- • Target participants from at least 25 countries
- • 3 finalist teams per country, with each team having an average of 2 student participants, and 2 support staff, making a total of 240 participants
- • 200 Student participants from the host country
